Put on the map by one wave
For most of its history, Nazaré was a quiet fishing town north of Lisbon that almost nobody in surfing had heard of. That changed in 2011, when Hawaiian big-wave surfer Garrett McNamara rode a wave here later measured at around 24 metres (78 ft) — a world record at the time. Overnight, the image of a tiny surfer dropping down a mountain of water below the clifftop Forte de São Miguel Arcanjo became a symbol of the sport’s outer limits.
McNamara had been tipped off by a local bodyboarder who emailed him about the monsters breaking off Praia do Norte. The waves are too big and too fast to paddle into, so Nazaré is surfed tow-in — a jet-ski whips the rider onto the peak, then races back to pluck them out of the impact zone. That partnership is not a stunt; it is what keeps the surfer alive.

The Nazaré Canyon
The secret lies on the seabed. Just off Praia do Norte runs the Nazaré Canyon — the largest submarine canyon in Europe, stretching roughly 230 km out into the Atlantic and plunging up to about 5 km deep. Unusually, it reaches almost to the beach, so its full focusing power lands right where surfers can use it.
Picture a deep, narrow gorge cut into the continental shelf, with shallow flats on either side. Swell rolling in from the open ocean does not stay a tidy line once it meets this terrain: part pours down the deep channel, part crosses the shallow shelf beside it. The canyon acts like a lens for wave energy, gathering it from a wide stretch of ocean and steering it onto a single stretch of coast.
The physics, simply
The mechanism comes down to speed. In deep water a swell travels fast; in shallower water it slows. Over the canyon the water stays deep, so the swell keeps its speed, while on the shallow shelf beside it the same swell drags on the bottom and brakes. When one part of a crest moves faster than the part next to it, the crest bends — this is refraction.
At Nazaré the swell effectively splits into two wave trains that wrap around the flanks of the canyon and curve back toward each other, converging on a single point off the headland. There they arrive in step, crest on crest, and their heights add together — constructive interference. The result is a pyramid-shaped peak two to three times higher than the open-ocean swell; a modest 3-metre swell can rear up as a 9-metre wall.
Just as important is what the canyon does not do. Almost anywhere else this much energy would close out in one unrideable line. Here the convergence stacks it into a peak with a shoulder — a face a surfer can actually ride, even as it towers overhead.
The perfect storm
The canyon is the amplifier, but it needs a signal. A truly giant day needs several ingredients at once:
- A long-period groundswell — organised energy from a deep North Atlantic winter storm, with a wave period of 14 seconds or more.
- The right direction — west to north-west, so the canyon aims its focused energy at the point.
- Light or offshore wind to hold the wave face upright instead of letting it crumble.
- The tide, which shifts where and how the peak breaks.
Those winter storms far out in the Atlantic are the engine: the harder and longer they blow, the cleaner and more powerful the groundswell days later. Miss one ingredient — period too short, wind onshore, swell angled wrong — and even a big forecast can underdeliver. That is why a good forecast matters here more than almost anywhere. A short history of the records
Nazaré has rewritten the record book more than once — a wave that keeps pushing the limit of what a human can ride:
- 2011 — Garrett McNamara rides a wave measured at around 24 metres (78 ft), a world record at the time and the moment Nazaré arrived on the map.
- 2017 — Rodrigo Koxa sets a new mark at 24.38 metres (80 ft).
- February 2020 — Maya Gabeira establishes the women’s record at 22.4 metres (73.5 ft).
- October 2020 — Sebastian Steudtner rides 26.21 metres (86 ft), ratified by Guinness World Records in 2024 and the current men’s record.

Thrilling — and brutally dangerous
The convergence that builds a rideable peak also makes Nazaré one of the most hostile arenas in surfing. When two wave trains cross, the water heaves, jacks and rebounds in every direction at once. Backwash off the cliff collides with the incoming swell, currents run hard and unpredictably, and a wipeout can hold a surfer down through several waves in a row.
This is why nobody rides here alone. The jet-ski that tows a surfer in is also a rescue craft, ready to reach a downed rider in seconds. It has nearly cost lives even so.
For spectators the rule is simple and non-negotiable: watch only from the fort on the headland, and never climb down onto the rocks or the beach when it is big. Sets arrive without warning and the water surges far higher up the cliffs than it looks. People have been swept off the rocks at Nazaré — keep well back from the edge.
