When the season runs
Nazaré's big-wave season runs from October to March, with the most reliable action between November and February. That is when deep North Atlantic low-pressure systems track across the ocean and fire one long-period groundswell after another toward the Portuguese coast.
What makes a giant day
Not every winter day is huge. A truly giant day needs several ingredients at once: a long-period groundswell (14 seconds or more), the right west-to-north-west direction so the canyon can focus it, and light or offshore wind to hold the wave face up. Miss one and even a big forecast underdelivers — which is exactly why the forecast and Big Wave Score matter here more than almost anywhere.
The event window
The winter is also when the world's best gather. The WSL's big-wave event at Nazaré — the TUDOR Nazaré Big Wave Challenge — is held on a waiting period during these months, called on at short notice when the forecast lines up. Keep an eye on our events page for the next edition.
